Certified FREed
FAQs

Q1: Do I need to identify as a Black woman to apply for the Certified FREed Fund?

A1: Yep, the Certified FREed Fund is specifically designed to support Black women* in fundraising. We aim to create a program tailored to their unique experiences and challenges.

*We define Black as lineage across the Afro-diaspora. Black-American, Caribbean, African roots, etc. We are using a gender-expansive definition of the word woman—inclusive of gender fluid and non-conforming identities.

Q2: When will the application for the Certified FREed Fund be released?

A2: It's here!! Submit an interest form today.

Q3: What if I don't pass the CFRE exam on the first attempt?

A3: The Certified FREed Fund is committed to your success. If you don't pass on the first attempt, we provide additional resources and support to help you prepare for subsequent attempts.

Q4: Can I apply if I have less than 3 years of fundraising experience?

A4: Unfortunately no, our three-year requirement aligns with the Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) eligibility criteria—a 36 months of active fundraising professional practice mandate as a prerequisite for exam qualification.

Q5: Is the CFRE certification the only focus of the program?

A5: While the CFRE certification is a primary goal, the program also includes coaching sessions, study materials, and community support to enhance your overall professional development. However, we ask that before you apply, you make sure you're committed to taking the exam!

Q6: What happens if I am unable to commit to the study period or exam preparation?

A6: We understand that life brings unexpected challenges. If you encounter difficulties during the study period, we encourage open communication, and we'll work with you to find a solution.

Q7: Can I reapply if I am not selected in the current cohort?

A7: Yes, applicants not selected for the current cohort are encouraged to reapply for subsequent cohorts. We value persistence and commitment to professional growth.

Q8: This sounds amazing, but I'm not interested in taking the CFRE exam. How can I support Melanate.'s mission in other ways?

A8: THANK YOU for your enthusiasm and willingness to contribute! Your support means a lot to us. Financial contributions are always appreciated; you can donate to the Fund or support Melanate. more broadly. Additionally, we highly value your time, connections, and energy. If you, or someone you know, could be a valuable resource to our work—such as serving as a mentor to the cohort or sharing expertise as an experienced resource mobilizer—please get in touch!

Q9: I still have questions! Can I reach out to ask a few more?

A9: Yes! Ask all the questions. Send an email to info@melanate.org
